ABOUT US

The Historical Society is proud to present the illustrious history of Dickinson County, from the Ice Aged fossils collected in Elmo to the warring native tribes in Chapman to the Spanish explorers searching for illusive lost cities of gold to the pioneers and settlers that braved the vast expanse.

George Freeman built a cabin off the banks of Chapman Creek, and William Lamb settled near present-day Detroit, and soon settlers would flood the area during the great western migration. The county was named for United States Senator from New York, Daniel Dickinson, and soon witnessed unbridled success thanks largely to Joseph McCoy's cow town capital in Abilene. Witness the recreation of the infamous Texas Street in a 1:28 scale model of the town that witnessed some of the greatest legends in American history.

As C.L. Brown was working on his father's farm in the Buckeye Township of Dickinson County, tragedy struck as his right arm had to be amputated after a farming accident. Brown took his misfortune and turned it into an global empire. Under the United Umbrella, several companies including Sprint Telecommunications were born in Abilene. The Museum of Independent Telephony is a hands-on experience following the history of the telephone from Alexander Graham Bell's first message to Mr. Watson., to the unforgettable flip phone of modern fame.
